About
In April 2019, I left my job in San Francisco with the intent of riding a bicycle across South America. After five weeks of Spanish classes in Medellin, I started riding from Cartagena de Indias, Colombia, with the goal of reaching Ushuaia, Argentina in March, after approximately 10 months and 10,000 miles.
My goal for this blog is not to regurgitate what I did every day. If you must know the details, there is a lot of repeated sweating, grunting, chocolate bars, and sweet views.
Rather, I aim to focus each piece on an interesting topic, thought, or anecdote that was relevant to each several days of my journey. I hope to run the gamut from silly conversations with locals to essays about the politics or history of the regions I pass through.
Each piece will also include a dump of photos from the ride, where I’ll caption a bit more of the interesting day-to-day stuff that doesn’t necessarily fit into the topic of the blog. Feel free to skip down to the photos!
Finally, there is a lot of Spanish in the posts because the language is a critical part of my experience here and I think translating would misrepresent interactions and certain words and phrases. I usually try to make it clear what was said otherwise.
I am normally about 2 weeks behind real time in posting these, as it takes some time to process my thoughts into a narrative, sit down to write, and edit and upload photos when I get wifi. All this usually occurs on rest days.
I also owe a big thanks to my amazing girlfriend, Liz, who helps me edit each piece before I post!
I hope you like it! Please write me or use the comment section to let me know what you think.
You can also follow me on strava or instagram below, where I upload both routes and photos pretty much every night if I have service.
